Yoshoku at UENO 3153

In front of the Ueno(上野) JR Station and just under the statue of Saigo san(西郷さん) of the Ueno Park, a restaurant-complex was newly opened. The name is "UENO 3153." If you read the number 3153 in Japanese, it is called "Saigo-san", whose meaning is "Mr. Saigo." Mr. Saigo is Saigo Takamori(西郷隆盛), a samurai and politician who greatly contributed to the Meiji Restoration(明治維新) but later rebelled against the government by responding to the complaints of former samurais. He was actually a rebel, but people love him so much because he always devoted himself without personal greed and sticked to humanity and justice. Still people see him a warm-heart hero and accordingly, his statue is decorated in the park previously owned by the Meiji Government. Saigo-san is a symbol of Ueno.

In the UENO3153, there are many branches of local restaurants around Ueno. One of them is "Ueno Seiyoken(上野精養軒)", a long-established French and Yoshoku restaurant since 1872. Their head restaurant is also located in the Ueno Park, near the Shinobazu Pond(不忍池). This new branch is chic with white and brown color furniture. Price setting is not so high. Lunch set is available JPY1,600. A la carte is from JPY1,200. Service is elegant and friendly. All glasses were rightly cristal.

Smoked salmon and fresh ham
Grilled scallops
Fried shrimps and crab croquette
Beef steak
Rolled cake
Cheese cake of beans
Dishes were orthodox. I didn't find any novelty, but noticed everything was properly good. It seemed their concept is keeping their traditions, not following the current trend. Comparing to other French and Italian restaurants, their appeal might be lower, but their straightforward dishes can't be missing. It might be good to use this restaurant in a casual manner such as during shopping or after visiting museums in the Ueno Park. The window-side seats were comfortable, getting the sun. The both white and red wines of Seiyoken label were also nice. My rating is 2.9 out of 5. Gochiso-samadeshita!

Cakes of LADUREE

The other day, a surprised gift received from a charming friend of Myanmar was cakes of LADUREE(ラデュレ)! LADUREE is a long-established French patisserie and has started its business in Japan since around 2008. Their most famous specialty is a double-decker macaron. LADUREE's shops are like a fairyland with pastel-colors that girls adore.
Saint-Honores Rose Raspberry
Millefeuille
Their cakes were definitely wonderful! As its taste is sophisticated, I ate up easily in spite of the big size.  Not so sweet. Balance of sweetness is very adequate. One of their popular cakes is "Saint-Honores Rose Raspberry", using an essence of rose. Usually I don't like so much desserts with rose flavor, but this was very good. The rose flavor did not harm the taste at all. Rather it was a good accent. Millufeuille was crispy and the rich butter taste was so nice. Gochiso-samadeshita! Many thanks:)

Lunch at Hibiya Park

For lunch break, I went to a French-Italian restaurant named "HIBIYA PALACE(日比谷パレス)" which is located near the administrative district side in the Hibiya Park(日比谷公園). As the appearance is nice, I wanted to enter. Same as exterior, interior is also good. White-based interior is chic and clean. Soft sunlight and greens of the park through the windows were so comfortable.
HIBIYA PALACE
Inside (greens through the windows are beautiful.)
Inside
Starter from buffet
Pasta
Cake and coffee
The price is a bit expensive for this kind of restaurant. The minimum lunch set is available from JPY1,800. If we order one main dish from pasta, fish or meet, buffet of starter is attached. Buffet offers various salad, steamed vegetables, side dishes, soup, bread, etc. Buffet-style starter is fun.

But main dish...a carbonara spaghetti was bad....Even soon after it was served, the spaghetti was already cold and solid. Taste itself was insufficient. It was a surprise for me to still have such a poor pasta in nowadays Tokyo. Even pasta sold at convenient stores must be more delicious...

As the atmosphere is nice, it is good to sit in HIBIYA PALACE with coffee for chatting with colleagues. Particularly women like this circumstance. But...the price does not meet the quality of food. So, my rating is 1.6 out of 5. Gochiso-samadeshita!

Strange but delicious Indian in Sendagi

Near Sendagi(千駄木) Station of Tokyo Metro and along the Shinobazu Street(不忍通り), there is an apparently unusual Indian restaurant called "Darjeeling(ダージリン)."  Without any information on this restaurant, you may hesitate to open the heavy wooden door...

Both of the interior and exterior are very decorative. Dazzling atmosphere. But this is a very delicious Indian restaurant. Moreover, different from ordinary Indian restaurants, they have many kinds of alcohol all over the world. For instance, we can enjoy Vietnamese beer together with curry. One of my favorite, Hoegaarden(Belgian beer) is also on the list.
Exterior of "Darjeeling"
Interior
Belgian beer and Indian beer
Fried cheese
Two types of curry and a naan
Garlic naan
The selection of curry is wide. Even if you have any dietary restriction, you can choose one curry which suits your preference. We ordered two curries, a  coconut-based and a tomato-based. They were sooo tasty! Creamy, strong and profound. The taste was complex with many spices and ingredients. I was touched by this taste! As for naan, Darjeeling's is the best as far as I know. Outside is a bit browned and very crispy, but inside is soft enough. Usually I can't eat up one naan by myself, but I can eat up this naan. Price is average as Indian restaurant(each curry costs around JPY1,000 and a naan is JPY300).

My rating is 3.9 out of 5. This rating is for the Sendagi branch. Darjeeling has several branches in Tokyo, but each shop has different taste. I like Sendagi. Gochiso-samadeshita!

Enjoy arts in Kurashiki and walk in Okayama

In the center of aesthetic area of Kurashiki, they have the OHARA Museum of Arts (大原美術館) as a landmark. The Museum was founded in the early 20th century by Ohara Magosaburo (大原孫三郎), a businessperson and a philanthropist. He greatly developed Ohara conglomerate such as current Kuraray(クラレ), etc. and used his huge earnings for society welfare and culture promotion. One of his achievements is the establishment of the museum introducing western modern paints to Japan so that Japanese learn the western paintings which were not so popular at that time.
OHARA Museum of Arts
The collections are magnificent. Kodama Torajiro(児玉虎次郎), a painter learned in Europe and received support by Ohara, bought all of them at his discretion during his stay. I was impressed by his aesthetic choice. Different from nowadays, information must have been limited and it made difficult him to select the right ones. In the Ohara Museum, we can see a lot of paintings of famous names. I recommend you to visit the museum which gives us a great impact to the tourism of Kurashiki.

For lunch, we went to a restaurant named "Hachikengura(八間蔵)" in Hotel Nikko Kurashiki(ホテル日航倉敷) near the aesthetic district. It is a French restaurant using an old authentic Japanese storage. The high ceiling brings a feeling of freedom. The interior is modern.
Outside of Hachikengura
Interior
Amuse
Starter
Local wine using muscat
Soup of pumpkin
Sweet potato puree rolled by beef
Salad
Bread
Dessert using grapes
At lunch, the choice of menu was limited. We had to choose a set meal among three. No a la carte menu. The price is around JPY3,000 per person. Novelty was not found. Most dishes were cooked in a very basic manner. Comme ci, comme ca. Service is maintained as a hotel quality. Local wine using muscat of Okayama was nice. Though it looks sweet, not at all. Dry and light flavor. That was a good finding. My rating is 2.5 out of 5. Gochiso-samadeshita!

After the lunch, as we still had time, we went to Okayama(岡山) city, the center city of Okayama Prefecture. In terms of tourism, Okayama seemed less attractive than Kurasiki, but it seemed busier regarding business. As a beginner of Okayama, we went to Korakuen garden(後楽園) and Okayama castle(岡山城).
Entrance of Korakuen garden

Traditional bridge and a pond

Korakuen garden is one of the three major Japanese gardens in Japan. But the impression of Korakuen was very simple comparing to other two. Yet, walking in the vast green fields was so refreshing. Few customers walked around in the late Sunday afternoon. I felt as if we could dominate the big garden.

Just next to the Korakuen garden, Okayama castle is located. 10-15 minutes walk. The castle is unfortunately a reconstructed one due to the air-attack of the World War II. We can go up to the 4th floor by elevator and to the top by steps. The view from the top was nice. The inside is a museum of the history of the castle and Okayama. I learned how rulers of the castle had been changed in the severe civil war period.

I was satisfied as a lover of history. But my legs...were so tired after much walk. We quickly fell asleep in Shinkansen to Tokyo...with good memory of this trip!

Kurashiki, classical and beautiful city

After the visit to Miyajima, I went to another city, Kurashiki (倉敷) in Okayama (岡山) Prefecture. Kurashiki is famous as a city preserving classical buildings and as a major industrial district in the west Japan. It is also known as a birthplace of jeans in Japan and there are many jeans companies in Kurashiki.
Kurashiki (aesthetic area)

Small but very attractive city
We can cruise a small river.
Most tourists go to the aesthetic area of Kurashiki, where we can feel classical Japanese atmosphere with buildings constructed in around Edo and Meiji periods. As Japan is a country struck by natural disasters, the city preserving old scenery like Kurashiki is quite distinct. The  aesthetic area is not so large and one-day stay might be enough. There are many shops selling local specialties and restaurants. Just walking around is very fun.

Breads

For dinner, I went to a classical yoshoku restaurant named "KIYUTEI(亀遊亭)" located in the aesthetic area. The atmosphere is like Meiji era, when Japan abandoned its seclusion policy and started the trade with Western powers in the 19th century. The mixture of cultures of Japan and west is presented in the interior of KIYUTEI. I felt as if I slipped back in time to the 19th century in sitting in this restaurant in Kurashiki.

According to the advice of a waiter, we ordered a steak set meal, their specialty around JPY3,150. The taste is also classical. Honestly speaking, starter and breads were not so good comparing to the standard, but others, particularly steak, were delicious. The steak sauce using much fried onions and soy sauce was very tasty. Even middle-ranked beef became much dainty. Doppo, a Kuarshiki's local beer was also good with bitter taste. My rating is 2.5 out of 5. Gochiso-samadeshita!
